3.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Rod, but Tip Broke Off During First Backpacking Trip, October 6, 2011

So much promise on this one! Great little rod. Collapsed down to a great size. Perfect for backpacking. I did catch some nice trout with this rod. However, the tip broke off 4 days into my backpacking trip. It wasn't even handled roughly. Very disappointing to say the least.

I still give it 3 stars because it is so cheap, but I fell on it first day and it easily snapped. To be fair most poles would of, but I just didn't like the feel of the pole anyway. Can't say I recommend.

This exact design has been offered by South Bend for quite awhile. I bought one of these rods many years ago, hung a decent ultralight reel on it with a smooth drag that actually worked when tested by a good fish ,and spooled with Trilene XT low-vis green 4# line . Then I put together a pocket-sized tackle box wit a few well-proven lures (think 1/16th and 1/8th ounce spinners and spoons, 2" Rapala floaters and countdowns, clear casting bubble with flies) ,and found a little zippered nylon case. It made a tidy little system that I could (and did) carry along on all my hikes and bikes , not to mention slipping it into my carry-on countless times, on both business and pleasure travel. All those situations where carrying even a light two-piece rod would be impractical or cumbersome.

Without writing a book, I used that outfit to catch literally thousands of fish over the years, mostly on activities that would not be considered "fishing trips" by any stretch. However, having this... Read more
