This rod and reel combo would make an excellent one for kids. I ordered it because I often take friends fishing that have no idea how to fish and the button caster is a good introduction. The rod itself is really nice, what you'd expect from shakespeare. The reel is a little tight you might have to loosen it a bit. I hadnt used a button caster in years but from what I can remember it is a good deal more responsive than your typical button caster. That said it is pretty difficult to reel in quickly. Overall it is a very good setup for a decent price.
