I looked inside and it didn't have the fine adjustment, or the other on the geared side. On the geared side, i twisted the knob thinking it would loosen it up. But to my surprise, it was a cap! i took it off, and it did not do what i hoped. i had to use needle nose pliers to turn it, and it just turned the whole spool. So overall, The anti backlash system does work, you CAN turn it on and off, but it is no abu garcia, diawa, or shimano. And after some practice, you can cast a pretty good ways.and im not even 16! so im sure someone older than me can cast it. I figured at the very low price, if he abused it, dropped it in the drink, etc., no big deal. As to the reel itself, it's easy to cast and the adjustable brake is pefect for training. Basically, I'm only cleaning out a birds nest every twenty casts, instead of every other cast, which is pretty good when the operator is six. Suprisingly, the reel actually casts pretty well. I can throw a mid-weight plastic about eighty feet. Finally, it has held up well for almost a year now and gets used pretty frequently. Over all, this is a great great deal. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful  Well, it does work, By This review is from: Shakespeare EZ Cast Baitcast Rod and Reel Combo 11 (6-Feet, 6-Inch) (Sports) Found this at a local store w 20% off so I figured why not, and then took it to the lake an hour later.Striper had been biting at the lake, caught 8, not w this combo though. While the design does prevent any type of backlash, it also prevents the casting of any distance at all. I used a Bomber deep running lure that I normally cast pretty far w A ZEBCO Z03, the ez cast was able to do roughly 2/3rds of that distance at best with the anti backlash system not engaged, and only 1/2 the distance of the Z03 with the anti backlash engaged. On the good side, the color matching pole and reel look neat together. Conclusion: If you do not need to cast out very far or want to throw out a line with a cannonball sized weight attached for distance,then you may have found a good reel. I will be returning mine within 24 hours of the pruchased. |
