I bought this combo to just have a cheap way to get back into fishing, but it was nothing was cheap after I found that the reel hesitated as the reel cylinder reached the bottom of the cycle like if the line was caught inside the reel, but that was not the case. I concluded by researching the problem that it could be that the reel only had one ball-bearing. My solution was to spend more then the whole combo by buying an Abu Garcia 102 10lbs reel that costs $35-$40. This reel works great. To escape the misery that I experienced just get the rod and a higher quality reel from Abu Garcia, Quantum XT Micro Spinning Reel, or a Shimano AXUL-S Ultra Light Special Graphite Fishing Reel. Then you will be set for a successful combo. As for line get a line that max's out the reel because this shakespeare rod is great just as other posted by other do not bend it into a "u" or "v" as some say remember its... I had a lot of problems with bird nesting in the reel. The rod is strong, light, and sensitive. I would buy the rod and look at Pflueger reels. Lets even the smallest fish put up a great fight but will not break IF USED CORRECTLY. I have had absolutely no problems with the reel at all, however I do suggest using some type of braid or the line may get tangled. If you want to upgrade the reel I would go with a Quantum XT Micro Spinning Reel. With that being said, I have caught many large fish with no problem. |
